About Black Lake Wildlife Management Area

Black Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a vast protected wetland complex located primarily in Natchitoches and Red River Parishes of northwestern Louisiana. It encompasses Black Lake and surrounding marshes, cypress-tupelo swamps, and bottomland hardwood forests that provide critical habitat for a variety of wildlife species. The area plays a significant role in regional waterfowl production and is well-known for its abundant populations of ducks, geese, deer, squirrel, turkey, and numerous fish species. Black Lake itself is a shallow natural lake, rich in fisheries such as largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and catfish, attracting anglers year-round. The WMA offers multiple boat launches and road access points, facilitating boating, fishing, and waterfowl hunting opportunities. In addition to hunting and fishing, visitors enjoy birdwatching, photography, and seasonal paddling on calm waterways. The landscape is dominated by bottomland hardwoods and wetlands, creating ideal conditions for amphibians, reptiles, and migratory birds. The area's management focuses on habitat conservation, controlled hunting seasons, and water-level regulation to maintain ecosystem health. Black Lake WMA has been managed as a wildlife area since the mid-20th century, reflecting Louisiana’s commitment to sustainable outdoor recreation and wildlife stewardship. Its extensive wetland habitat makes it a vital refuge for native species, especially during migration seasons. Visitors can experience the tranquil beauty of southern Louisiana’s wetlands while engaging in traditional outdoor activities with opportunities for solitude and wildlife encounters.
